Spoil Yourself With A Wood Canopy Bed

Wood Canopy Bed

Wood canopy beds symbolize richness and royalty.  The wood canopy bed will give your bedroom a classical look.  If you are a person who likes to design your house with antique furniture belonging to the 14th and 15th centuries of Europe, then your bedroom should hold a wood canopy bed too.

Wood canopy beds have their origin in China and some of the Asian countries.  These people have been using wood canopy beds for centuries and the wood mania has not ceased till today.

In China, the canopy bed traditionally belonged to the bride of the house.  She would draw the curtains of the bed during the day so that the bed could be used as a private reception area for her female guests.  She would also use it during the day to do some embroidery work, mending clothes or just sitting on the bed and doing some reading.

Different types of curtains can be used as a canopy, according to the seasons.  During the summer the curtains which form the canopy prevent insects from disturbing the person sleeping in the bed.  During winter the curtains are made of a thicker material so as to protect the person from the cold.  Canopies can be made from different materials like, twill, serge, silk, woven tapestry, and fur-lined cloth to name a few.

In the West, canopy beds became a trend around the 14th and 15th century.  The canopy bed was originally known as a tester.  But testers are not quite the same thing as canopy beds.  A tester is a four poster with two freestanding posts on one end and a headboard on the other.

If you are thinking of having a wood canopy bed in your bedroom, you should make sure that the other furniture in the bedroom too has the same classic look.  You could match your canopy bed by having an antique dresser near it and an old antique storage trunk.  That would give your bedroom a dramatic look.

If you are shopping for a canopy bed, you should also keep in mind the height of your bedroom ceiling.  Most canopy beds range from a height of 75 to 100 inches.  So you have to first make sure your ceiling is way above that height so that there is adequate room for the canopy bed.

These canopy beds were used in the days where there was no heating or cooling system.  Now we have that luxury through central heating and central cooling, but still many people love to have a canopy bed at home because it provides that extra warmth that an enclosed canopy bed provides.
